Why should my child wrestle?

Wrestling is the world's oldest competitive sport and can be very demanding yet very satisfying in terms of accomplishments. Wrestling offers an opportunity for kids to become physically fit, compete with other kids in their own age and weight class, learn the value of teamwork and at the same time learn to face opponents one on one.

Wrestling is a grueling sport that requires great stamina and endurance. Kids must train hard to be competitive and fit enough to compete. It is  a sport that will demand and ensure top conditioning.

Skills learned in wrestling can be used in other physically demanding sports such as football and many track events. Kids have to be courageous to compete in highly physical sports and wrestling helps impart that courage.

Things your child will need

Wrestling Gear: Singlet, head gear, wrestling shoes, knee pads.

Practice Gear: T shirt, gym shorts or sweats, wrestling shoes, head gear. No jeans, shirts or shorts with zippers.

Singlets and shoes will be the biggest expense. Shop around and great bargains can be found. Shoes can be found from $25 to $45. Singlets usually run $30 to $40 but better bargains can be found also.

Tournaments

Entry fees for tournaments range from $12 to $20 but $20 is rare. Parents can pick and choose which tournaments to enter but should plan on at least 3 tournaments. Tournament mat time is important in the development of a wrestler and should be taken advantage of. Sometimes your child can be entered in more than one weight class. Although you will pay two entry fees, your child gets much more mat time and a better chance for a competition trophy.
